We’ve reached the Sweet 16 in March Madness, a new baseball season is here, and postseasons in the NBA and NHL are mere weeks away. What a time to be alive as a sports fan!
Ding Dong, Cinderella’s dead?
Ding Dong, Cinderella’s dead? It’s definitely the talking point after the first two rounds of March Madness. I feel like we have this conversation every year. The elephant in the room is simple to assess. There are people who only watch the Madness to nail some heavy moneyline dogs and, hopefully, walk into work on a Monday to tell their boss to pound sand. I get it.
Upsets are fun, but when they don’t happen, it doesn’t mean the tournament is bad, or “sucks.” To the “NIL is killing the tournament” crowd, is it really? We saw mid- and low-majors push high-majors in many of the opening-round games. VCU and High Point obviously advanced, but look deeper. Siena, Wright State, Hofstra, McNeese, Furman, Kennesaw, and Akron were all in very competitive games inside the final eight minutes. Box scores can always be deceiving. As someone who has watched every single game of this tournament, some of them twice already, this has been a very fun tournament. It only gets better from here. Remember, in the College Football Playoff, what is everyone’s major complaint? Horrible early matchups. As sports fans, we crave “best on best” matchups. We have a lot of them on tap this week.

We’ll also power you through lunch with a look back on the Sweet 16 games from Thursday and a look ahead to the Elite 8. Some thoughts on the early MLB season and what to watch in sports for the weekend. It’s Friday, which means we finish with another Mike Drop.

💲 A Cyclone headed for Indy? Just hear me out. Jefferson's injury status is huge. But Iowa State leaned on their vet, Tamin Lipsey to pummel Kentucky. I know the Cats aren't Michigan, but at +290 to reach the Final 4, it makes sense if you’re on my vibe here. Iowa State will be the underdog to Michigan if they inevitably meet this weekend. But it's also likely that the ML price in that game is lower than the +290 to reach the Final 4... think about it. This Iowa State team is a wagon, and will likely have a sizeable crowd at the United Center as well as Michigan.
💲 I’m not a big “Win Totals Guy” in any sport. This year, I’m taking a different approach, however. We’ve talked about the lineup that the Western Sacramento Nomads (for those that don’t know, the A’s) have put together. They play in a Triple-A Ballpark still. While they still don’t have the pitching, I love Sacramento’s bats enough to exceed their win total of 75.5 at -105
💲 Let’s stay on that theme, shall we? Last year, the Dodgers, who seem very uninterested in the regular season, went 93-69. Their win total this year is 102.5. Last year’s Dodgers were the definition of mediocre on the road at 41-40. I think the NL is markedly better across the board this year. The Dodgers are the Dodgers, but they’re also not getting any younger. I’ll take the Dodgers under 102.5 wins at -105, please.
